The server must be standing in the service area, the other member of his/her team may stand anywhere at his/her end of the court, but must not obstruct the opposing team’s view of the server. The players on the receiving team may stand anywhere within their end of the court.

Article 6: Serving and receiving

1. Legal service: The server stands inside the service area, with one supporting foot firmly on the ground (i.e. not moving or jumping). One hand throws the ball upwards and backwards at the player’s side (to a height of not less than 10 centimetres from the point of release); the other hand holds the racquet and prepares to meet the ball. The ball makes contact with the racquet, follows the correct curve and is released, passing over the net and into the playing area on the other side of the court. In singles play between players in the over-35 age categories, the ball must land within the semi-circular area of the back court; in doubles play the ball may land anywhere in the opposing team’s side of the court . Players in the under-35 age category may use revolving service techniques, and may serve to any position within the opposing player’s or team’s side of the court. Players in the over-45 age categories may not use revolving or concealed service techniques, but must use the high catch low throw technique.

2. Service allowed: At the start of the game or after the umpire has indicated the score, both sides must be prepared to serve and receive at any time. The umpire blows a whistle or gives a word of command and makes the “service allowed” gesture to indicate that the service may take place.

1. When serving, the server does not stand in the service area or steps on the restriction line marking the boundary of the service area.

2. When serving, the server does not throw the ball high enough to be visible, i.e. to a height of less than 10 centimetres from the palm of the hand.

3. When serving, both of the server’s feet are in motion or in the air, i.e. there is no supporting foot on the ground. In the case of players in the over-45 age category, the server uses a revolving or concealed service technique.

4. After the server catches the ball on his/her racquet, the curve appears discontinuous, or the position of the racquet relative to the curve is incorrect, i.e. the server appears to push, poke, shake or hit the ball, etc.

5. In the case of players in the under-35 category, the server uses a revolving service technique and after the ball makes contact with the racquet performs a curve exceeding 360 degrees before releasing the ball.

6. When serving, the server throws the ball up and waves the racquet about before it makes contact with the ball.

Article 9: Re-serve

1. If, after the server has thrown the ball up, i.e. after it has left his/her hand, he/she does not make any waving movements, and does not touch the ball with his/her racquet, the point is declared invalid, and the server must re-serve.

2. If the ball is served although the umpire has not blown his/her whistle or given the word of command and made the “service allowed” gesture, the point is declared invalid, and the server must re-serve.

3. If the correct order of service has not been observed, and the error has been discovered before the next service, the point is declared invalid and the server must re-serve. If the error is not discovered before the next service, but is discovered before the third service following the error, it may be penalised, depending on the situation: i.e., if the server wins the point, it is invalid; if the server loses the point, it is valid. Making the ball readjust to the serve man’s hand. How many balls left then to serve how many. If the mistake in the order of service is not discovered until the right of service changes, it shall be disregarded.

4. If, during service, both sides commit an infringement of the rules, the point is declared invalid, and the server must re-serve.

5. If, during service, an unforeseen situation arises (e.g.: if a ball from another court falls or rolls onto the current court), the point is declared invalid, and the server must re-serve.

6. If the service ball hits the net and lands in the legal area, the server may re-serve

Article 10: Rules on the techniques of catching and throwing

1. Legal catching and throwing: The racquet makes contact with the ball by following its incoming trajectory, and retains contact by adapting its angle and speed to cushion the ball’s motion. The ball remains on the racquet and is led in a clear, uninterrupted curving movement to the point where it is released, after which it passes over the net and lands within the valid area on the opposing player’s or team’s side of the court. The player may move his/her feet while executing this technique, but must not take more than two steps.

2. The permissible number of catching and throwing movements: The players on both sides may only make one legal catching and throwing movement (including the service) to make the ball pass over the net. In doubles play, the rule can be adopted that each player may either pass the ball directly over the net, or may play it to his/her partner before it passes over the net. In any case, each player may only catch and throw once before the ball passes over the net.

3. Infringements of rules for catching and throwing: When catching and throwing (including serving), if there appears to be a rigid hit between the ball and the racquet, or if there is discontinuity in the leading curve, of if there are multiple contacts with the ball, it shall be regarded as an infringement of the rules.
3.1 Rigid hit: If the surface of the racquet appears not to cushion the ball’s motion fully, but rather the ball appears to bounce off the racquet, it shall be regarded as a rigid hit. (If there is no obvious incidence of hitting, i.e. the “leading” movement appears to be executed correctly and the racquet and the ball exhibit the corresponding movements, but the sound of an impact is audible, this shall not be penalised as an infringment of the rules.)
3.2 Discontinuity in the leading curve: If, during the execution of the leading curve, the movement of the racquet appears to be interrupted, stops, feints or appears to be discontinuous in any other way, it shall be regarded as a discontinuity.
3.2.1 Leading interrupted: if, at any point on the leading curve, there appears to be a short break before the catching and throwing movement continues (or if power is applied for a second time).
3.2.2 Holding: if at any time during the leading movement, the racquet appears to stop leading the ball, and/or the centrifugal force of the ball on the surface of the racquet is lost and the player appears to be holding the ball on the racquet..
3.2.3 Reverse leading: if the motion of the racquet switches from clockwise when catching the ball to anti-clockwise when throwing the ball, or from anti-clockwise when catching to clockwise when throwing.
3.2.4 Adding power to change direction: if the leading curve suddenly changes, i.e. the angle of the racquet relative to the ball is altered in order to push, smash, hook or thrust the ball.
3.3 Multiple contact: If the ball appears to make contact with the racquet more than once during the execution of the leading curve, it shall be regarded as multiple contact.

Article 11: Rules on attacking shots

1. If the ball is released at a point above the height of the net, it is regarded as an attacking shot.

2. High attacking shot: If the player jumps while completing the circular motion of the racquet during a low catch high throw in order to increase the speed and the power of the release, it is regarded as a high attacking shot.

3. A player standing in the front court (including the restriction line) must not increase the speed and power of his/her movement while throwing the ball. Second: even if there is no increase in speed and power, the tangent of the release trajectory must not be downward. If the tangent of the ball’s trajectory is not horizontal or upward, it will be regarded as an attacking shot in the front court and therefore an infringement of the rules.

4. When executing a high attacking shot with increasing speed and power, the player’s supporting foot or the foot from which he/she jumped must be in the back court, i.e. behind (and not touching) the restriction line; and the ball must land in the opponent’s back court.

Article 12: Competition rules

1. General stipulations
1.1 In bounds: if the ball lands on the ground within the court, or on the boundary line, it is regarded as being in bounds.
1.2 If the ball hits the net and then lands on the other player’s or team’s side of the court, it is regarded as a legal ball.
1.3 Dead ball: when the ball is touching the ground or an infringement of the rules has occurred, the ball is regarded as a dead ball.
1.4 Re-match: if unforeseen circumstances arise during a match, the score is retained and the match is resumed once the requisite conditions have been restored. If neither the head umpire nor the deputy umpire are able to make a decision on the result of a match, a re-match should be awarded. If the players on one side suggest a re-match and the players on the other side approve, the head umpire may respect the suggestions of both parties and award a re-match.

2. Infringements of rules
2.1 The ball lands out-of-bounds.
2.2 The ball does not pass over the net, or it passes outside of the net posts, or through a hole in the net.
2.3 The point at which the racquet and ball first make contact and the point at which the ball is released are not on the same side of the current court.
2.4 The ball touches a fixed object in the arena or the ball touches a player’s body or clothing.
2.5 If, while a player is executing a leading curve, the racquet touches the ground and if this contact influences the leading curve, it is regarded as a infringement of the rules. (If it does not influence the leading curve, it is not penalised as an infringement of the rules.)
2.6 A player’s racquet, body or clothing touches the net or the net posts.
2
.7 A player steps on the middle line.
2.8 A player plays an attacking shot from within the restriction area, i.e. increasing the speed and power when throwing, and/or throwing the ball with a downward trajectory.
2.9 If, in doubles play, the racquets of two players on the same team hit together and this impact influences the leading curve, it is regarded as an infringement of the rules. (If it does not influence the leading curve, it is not penalised as an infringement of the rules.)
2.10 When catching and throwing, a player takes more than two steps while the ball is in contact with his/her racquet, or the curve exceeds 360 degrees before the ball is thrown.
2.11 Male and female players in the over-60 age category execute a high attacking shot, increasing the speed and power of the ball.
